Join Indy’s cooking classes

More by this author

Whether you consider yourself a well-seasoned cook or your idea of “cooking” is fixing a bowl of cereal or popping a frozen meal into the microwave, participating in a cooking class can be beneficial. Attendees learn the recipe for a new meal, they get a chance to connect with community members and they make long-lasting memories outside of the kitchen.

Following are some of the cooking classes offered in Indianapolis. If you see something you like, don’t hesitate to sign up. All of these classes are in high demand and sell out quickly.

Chef JJ’s Back Yard

If you’re looking to light some fire under your cuisine during Chef JJ’s Back Yard cooking classes, you may have to wait a while. These cooking classes are in such high demand they sell out months in advance. Those who are lucky enough to grab a ticket, which averages $70 per person, can learn to grill their seafood to perfection, smoke their meats, serve up Caribbean-style food and make fall-off-the-bone ribs. Unfortunately, classes from now through June 2016 are sold out, but more of these one-of-a-kind events will be back on the calendar for July.

Nestle Inn

If you think a bed and breakfast only offers a nontraditional lodging destination, then you’ve got it all wrong. Nestle Inn, located near downtown, is widely known for its cooking classes. Guests are invited to get messy as they cook up tasty treats and savory dishes on Friday evenings and Saturday afternoons.

Chefs of the classes come from The Chef’s Academy and local restaurants and teach guests how to sharpen their knife skills, create homemade pasta and more. All classes are open to everyone, and no previous cooking experience is necessary. If you’re ready to dive into Nestle Inn’s kitchen, visit its website and sign up as soon as possible, as classes sell out very fast. Only four classes remain open.

Panera Bread

If the children are constantly pulling out the pots and pans to bang on or deeply desire to help during dinner, it may be time to widen their culinary perspective by taking them to a cooking class at Panera Bread. While only select locations hold these classes for children, the Willow Lake location at 2902 W. 86th St. is happy to welcome your child to its Bakers-in-Training program and invites them to slip on their chef hats and aprons for a good time. Classes are recommended for ages 5–12, and only groups of 10–15 children are accepted. The cost is $20 per child, and classes must be scheduled at least three weeks in advance.

Participants will each craft two French baguettes — one to bring home and one to donate to people in need. They’ll also decorate their own cookie.

The Chef’s Academy

Get intimate in The Chef’s Academy’s 15-person cooking classes. These community cooking classes are two-and-a-half hours long and led by instructors of The Chef’s Academy. In the past, participants have made their own sausage, learned how to cooked filled pastas and crafted their own Spanish tapas. The April 22 class will take place at 7 p.m., when each attendee will create their own sushi rolls. Additional classes will be posted soon.
