In many avenues of life, the more we give, the more we get. That adage rings most true when it comes to volunteering. Volunteering can help boost your career prospects and social network, uplift your community and give you a sense of pride. April is National Volunteer Month, and in Indianapolis, there are ample opportunities to give back.Ā 

Not sure where to get started? No matter your area of interest, there is an opportunity to match. Here are a few places to start:

Feed the hungry:

Gleaners Food Pantry reaches thousands of people by distributing food to more than 250 food pantries, soup kitchens and shelters in 21 Indiana counties. Food pantry volunteers play a crucial role in ensuring the organization is able to fulfill key rolessuch askeeping the shelves organized. In the food pantry, volunteers greet and assist clients and carry items for clients. There are also data entry opportunities and a senior shopping day each month in need of volunteers. Advocate for the youth:

Over 5,000 children in Indianapolis have been removed from their home due to abuse or neglect. A volunteer advocate with Child AdvocatesĀ works with both the biological and the foster parents and meets with teachers, doctors and social workers to ensure the childā€™s needs are met. Support the animals:

From walking, grooming and bathing animals to opening up your home to a temporary furry guest, animal lovers have numerous opportunities to show love to all of manā€™s best friends by getting involved with Indianapolis Animal CareĀ Services. Beautify the city:Ā 

Plant trees, pick up trash and build up your community. Keep Indianapolis Beautiful gives Hoosiers a chance to get their hands dirty for a good cause by revamping public spaces in diverse communities. Individuals and corporations can sign up at kibi.org.Ā

Tutor the homeless:Ā 

Individuals and organizations can donate their time to School on Wheels, a nonprofit that provides one-on-one tutoring to homeless school-aged children. Donate your lunch hour, volunteer after school or sign up to help in the office. Learn more at indyschoolonwheels.org.

Impact the arts:
