EMCC’s Café 37 Grand opening April 22

If you’re ever in the Martindale-Brightwood community, the home of the Indianapolis Recorder Newspaper, you may be aware there aren’t many nutritious food options in the area. Much of the region offers fried foods and sweet treats, however the Edna Martin Christian Center (EMCC) is looking to change the way the community eats. On April 22, they and Keystone Catering will celebrate the grand opening of Café 37 located in 37 Place at 2605 E. 25th St.

Alexandra Joshua, deputy director of services at EMCC said the neighborhood is considered a “food desert.”

“Community members do not have easy access to fresh produce and quality meats and are often left with few options aside from fast, fried food,” said Joshua. “Cafe 37 will make it convenient for community members to have a reasonably priced, wholesome and healthy meal.”

All of Indianapolis are encouraged to unwind from life’s hustle and bustle inside this new 25-seat restaurant. Diners can enjoy nutritious meals, including light and fit options such as a Turkey burger with sweet potato fries, pan seared Tilapia with Lemon Aioli and Tarragon Chicken. Weekly rotating items will also be available Monday through Friday noon until 2 p.m.

Not only will the center serve the community through its food service, it will train students in its culinary and hospitality programs.

“Having students who have matriculated through EMCC’s Culinary and Hospitality Program staff the cafe ensures dishes are prepared with love and that we are continuing the legacy left by Mrs. Edna Martin,” said Joshua. “Giving students the opportunity to assist with operating Cafe 37 provides them with invaluable hands-on experience that will set them up for success once they complete the program and seek gainful employment.”

The culinary training program prepares individuals to take the exam set by the Indiana Code 410-IAC7-22, which requires mandatory certification of at least one person who oversees food safety operation within a food establishment. This instructor-led course focuses on completing all preparations necessary for an individual to successfully complete their certification exam. Topical areas of study include sanitation management, food safety hazards, factors affecting food-borne illnesses, personal hygiene, and the use and calibration of temperature-measuring instruments. When they finish the program, students receive a Certified Professional Food Management certification, and their names will be added to the National Registry of Food Managers.

Tysha Hardy-Sellers, executive director of EMCC said EMCC is a lead partner in the effort to improve quality of life plans on the near-northeastside.

“In that role, we work to support community goals to enhance the skills of residents and meet the needs of employers. This is one of the many efforts EMCC is leading to increase job training, certification and other workforce development options,” she mentioned.

Joshua believes Café 37 will help promote EMCC’s Culinary and Hospitality Program, although they already have an overwhelming demand.

“Each class fills up quickly and we have even had to start a waiting list. Cafe 37 will be an invaluable outlet for marketing the program,” she noted.

Café 37 can also be rented for private parties.
