R2Go great for working moms

As a working mother, I don’t have the time or patience to go in and out of multiple stores to purchase one or two items. I appreciate and enjoy one store that offers multiple services. Target and Costco are my two favorites. I can add R2Go to that list.

I read online it was a specialty market and wanted to find out exactly what that meant.

R2Go was easy to locate as it is housed on 11th and College Avenue. I’ve passed that corner countless times and didn’t recall any businesses there. If there were businesses, they are restructuring the corner and providing R2Go trendy neighbors.

My curiosity was put at ease when I walked into the market. R2Go is like a mini store with a food counter.

I came for the food, but decided to walk around a bit to see what else R2Go had to offer. I saw non-traditional brands of cooking aids and food items, which I love. I found items for dogs, condiments, mixes, jams, oils, drinks, snacks, and small and medium-sized cooking utensils and aids.

To me, items like this are perfect for food/kitchen gift baskets or entertaining family or friends. Many of the items are even good and affordable for everyday consumption.

I continued walking and came to the refrigerated section. I saw items I could purchase immediately, like a yogurt parfait; items that could aid in food preparation like fresh, home made chicken stock; and everyday grocery items like a gallon of Trader’s Point Creamery milk.

After I made it around the store, I decided to order lunch. R2Go meals change regularly, which I don’t mind because I like my meals to have variety. I perused the sandwich list and ordered the turkey sandwich on whole wheat with cucumber/onion relish and herbed mayo. Since the store carried smaller brands, I wanted to make sure I walked out of R2Go with something else from a small company. I added Dirty brand potato chips and XXX Rootbeer from Lafayette, Ind. to my meal. I spent about $10.

The meatball sub and Regina’s Bacon Panini (bacon, avocado, watercress, and apple chutney on ciabatta bread) were contenders.

The whole-wheat bread tasted healthy and delicious, unlike some “healthy” breads that taste like cardboard. The turkey was fresh, cold and the cucumber/onion relish and herbed mayo gave the sandwich a delightful, light flavor I’d never tasted before.

The chips were fresh, crispy and also appealed to my healthy side. The rootbeer had the fizz of a soda, but the rootbeer’s flavor was mellow. Rootbeer is one of my favorite drinks and I’d never tasted one like the XXX brand.

What made me even more pleased was that R2Go had fully-prepared, healthy meals available. So on a night I don’t want to cook, I can stop by the store and purchase an Amish country brined roasted chicken, veggie lasagna or Creole mushroom and pepper stew. Add some veggies already in my freezer and after a long day of reporting and writing, dinner is served.

R2Go specializes in take-away meals, soups, salads and side dishes made with fresh, local ingredients. I’m so glad Regina Mehallick, owner of R2Go and R Bistro, thought of such a valuable concept for working moms like me who want healthy items for my family I can have in a flash.
