Restaurant Spotlight: Don Gusto PJ

More by this author

Back when we were students at Butler University, my husband (then-boyfriend) and I would make it a point to visit Biscuits Cafe in Broad Ripple for its amazing Mexican breakfast. Our love for Mexican breakfast is one reason we chose to honeymoon in Mexico. We were excited to learn the Mexican bakery on the south side across from Boydenā€™s Bakery, where we often get donuts, serves breakfast.

The bakery is called Don Gusto PJ, and in addition to creating custom cakes and pastries for weddings, quinceaneras, birthdays and any other occasion, the cafe serves breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days a week.

The little restaurant doesnā€™t look too spectacular from the outside, so I did some online recon before deciding to try their breakfast. Reviewers on Yelp, Facebook and several other sites enthusiastically recommend the eatery, so we took their word for it.

We went on a recent Sunday morning, and though the place is small, there were plenty of tables available. One other group ā€” a party of four ā€” was at the restaurant when we went. From what we could tell, there were only two people working: one person doing the cooking and one person handling all the customer service. The service was great and our host/server/cashier was very attentive without hovering. He brought us menus right away and took our drink orders.

The breakfast menu wasnā€™t very extensive, but it included the main players, namely huevos rancheros and breakfast burritos. Scrambled eggs and omelets are also available.

To be honest, even though weā€™d set out for breakfast, we each came close to ordering from elsewhere on the menu; I was looking at the quesadillas, and my husband was eyeing the Torta Cubana. We both ultimately settled on the chorizo and egg burrito, him with a side of rice and me with a side of fries. (The fries were the default side, and I thought it was odd at first to have fries as a breakfast item. Then I remembered hash browns are a thing.)

The food was cooked to order, but the wait was short. The burritos were huge and delicious, and I was struck by how fresh the lettuce and cheese tasted. The server brought a couple types of hot sauce to the table for us, and we appreciated being able to choose the amount of heat we added to our breakfasts.

Weā€™d both been eyeing the bakery case and menu of ice cream selections throughout the meal, but we were too full to eat a dessert. Instead, we got a piece of tres leche cake to go. What is there to even say about tres leche cake? Itā€™s always amazing, and this piece was no exception.

The verdict: We likely wonā€™t be back for breakfast, but my husband works nearby and said he will definitely try it out for lunch. Iā€™m looking forward to stopping by for dinner, and Iā€™ll be sure to leave room for a cheesecake chimichanga.
