Restaurant Review: Blaze Pizza

More by this author

I’ve been in the mood for pizza lately, and I’m not sure why, but I believe it started one evening when I spotted a pizza commercial while editing the paper for deadline day. Ever since then, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on some pizza.

While I had another pizza place in mind for lunch, I discovered Blaze Pizza while on my way to lunch. I stopped by the Carmel location on Pennsylvania Street and was welcomed by a very long line of customers. As I had about 45 minutes before I had to leave for my next appointment, I decided to stay and try something new. Although my place in line was secured near the back of the restaurant, which began at the door, I glanced around the room to look at the different pizzas customers were enjoying.

I could tell the crust was thin and included lots of toppings. From my area I could see part of the menu that asked customers to choose signature pizza or build their own. While I didn’t know which toppings were available, I decided the build-your-own option would most likely fit me best, as I can sometimes be a little picky when it comes to food.

Nine signature pizzas were up for grabs including the Meat Eater with pepperoni, crumbled meatballs, red onion, mozzarella and red sauce; the Green Stripe with pesto drizzle over grilled chicken, roasted red peppers, chopped garlic, mozzarella and arugula; the Veg Out with zucchini, mushrooms, red onion, mozzarella, gorgonzola and red sauce dollops; and the BBQ Chkn with grilled chicken, mozzarella, red onion, banana peppers, gorgonzola and barbecue sauce drizzle.

About 10 minutes later I made it to the front of the line and experienced some of the best customer service of my life.

It began once I arrived at the front of the line and was asked my name. After choosing the build-your-own option and being handed down to the next employee in the assembly line, I began looking at the toppings, which included any pizza lover’s favorites: applewood bacon, crumbled meatballs, grilled chicken, smoked ham, ricotta, banana peppers, cherry tomatoes, mushrooms, zucchini, white cream sauce, arugula, pesto … you name it, they had it! Of course there were a lot more toppings, but this review would be way longer than needed if all were listed.

I saw the second employee on the line take freshly formed dough crafted into a pizza pie out of cooler and top it with red sauce. I was then introduced to three to four more employees who addressed me by name and made polite small talk as they added applewood bacon, shredded mozzarella cheese, grilled chicken and more tasty red sauce.

Once I made my way down the line, I watched my pizza go into a huge oven where several other customers’ pizzas were being cooked as well. I found out customers could watch a blazing fire cook their pizzas thoroughly in just 180 seconds. Blaze Pizza employees call this “fast fire’d pizza.”

My 11-inch pizza was cooked to perfection, and my name was called just two minutes later.

The pizza was very saucy, just like I like it, and the crust was pretty good considering I’m usually not a big fan of thin crust pizza.

If you’re looking for a quick lunch or dinner, don’t be intimidated by Blaze Pizza’s lengthy line, as it goes pretty quickly, the customer service is superb and the food is well worth the wait.
