March is National Women’s History Month and the Indiana State Museum is honoring that with poetry readings by women through Write On: Black Poets Rock! The one-day event features Tasha Jones, founder of the “Hello Beautiful” movement. Jones, Indiana’s youngest Poet Laureate Nominee returns to Indianapolis from a tour of London with a deepened perspective and renewed zeal.
Various workshops from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. encourage students, educators and anyone who loves wordplay to discover self-exploration, finding inspiration from old ideas to create new art, seeking the relevance of hip-hop lyrics and participate in a poetry slam.
Visitors are encouraged to bring their best work or someone else’s they admire, or just come prepared to listen or write something fresh and new as Tasha Jones teaches how to recycle poetry and take it from “Blah to Ahhh.”
The event is in conjunction with the REPRESENT: Celebrating Indiana’s African-American Artists exhibition, at the museum through Oct. 14, 2012.
