One World Market: A one-stop shop for Japanese cuisine

More by this author

From Pocky to produce, an abundance of delicious and affordable Japanese cuisine can be found on Indy’s north side. Nestled behind the Castleton Square Mall is One World Market, a “hidden gem” that is part grocery store and part restaurant.

The grocery store section is full of unique Japanese specialty products, cooking utensils, fresh fruits and vegetables. You can try Pocky, a Japanese biscuit stick dipped in rich, dark chocolate. Don’t leave without buying yourself some Sake, a Japanese wine that is made with fermented rice. At One World Market, you will find a little bit of everything including tea, seaweed, tuna, salmon and eel. One World Market also sells prepackaged and refrigerated meals, but if you want something hot and fresh to order, you will have to venture further into the establishment.

One World Market is home to a food-court-style restaurant that serves tasty authentic Japanese food at affordable prices. Some of their more popular options are unique takes on classic dishes, such as their dragon roll sushi. Another sushi dish the restaurant offers is sashimi. Sashimi is a Japanese delicacy consisting of fresh raw meat or fish sliced into thin pieces. Other meals include a variety of noodle and rice-based dishes made with beef, pork, shrimp and more.

I ordered the beef and curry, which consists of a combination of beef, onion, rice, and curry sauce. As I waited for my food to be prepared, I browsed the many unique novelty items for sale. I found erasers that looked like sushi, chopsticks in a wide variety of colors and umbrellas shaped like katanas. The food arrived quickly, and I was not disappointed by its taste. The beef and rice were combined with just enough curry to give the meal the right amount of flavor, and the seasoned peppers that came on the side added variety to the plate.

By the end of my visit, I was very happy with both my food and my service. If you are looking for a taste of Japan with no passport required, look no further than One World Market.
