More by this author

The late, legendary tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson receives a hard-bop tribute tonight, April 24, in Naptown at the Jazz Kitchen with a quintet including some of Naptown’s best-known musicians.

The Joe Henderson Band includes: Rob Dixon and Sophie Faught, sax; Steven Alexander Jones, piano; Nick Tucker, bass; and Kenny Phelps, drums.

The musicians say theyā€™ve assembled the band out of affection for Hendersonā€™s music and spirit. There are sets at 7:30 and 9:30 p.m. at the club at 5377 N. College Ave., cost is $15.

On Sunday, April 26, at 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. Grammy winning pianist, composer, educator and social activist Danilo Perez returns for his fourth appearance at the Jazz Kitchen. $30 ($40 front row seating)

Perez has performed with Indiana Avenueā€™s Slide Hampton and is currently touring with jazz legend Wayne Shorter. On Monday, April 27, from 7-11 p.m., jazz lovers on a budget can enjoy the monthly jazz jam session officiated by trumpeter Clifford Ratliff plus pianist Kevin Anker, Richard ā€œSleepyā€ Floyd on drums and Fred Withrow on bass. There is no cover charge for the Monday event.
