The late, legendary tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson receives a hard-bop tribute tonight, April 24, in Naptown at the Jazz Kitchen with a quintet including some of Naptown’s best-known musicians.
The Joe Henderson Band includes: Rob Dixon and Sophie Faught, sax; Steven Alexander Jones, piano; Nick Tucker, bass; and Kenny Phelps, drums.
The musicians say theyāve assembled the band out of affection for Hendersonās music and spirit. There are sets at 7:30 and 9:30 p.m. at the club at 5377 N. College Ave., cost is $15.
On Sunday, April 26, at 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. Grammy winning pianist, composer, educator and social activist Danilo Perez returns for his fourth appearance at the Jazz Kitchen. $30 ($40 front row seating)
Perez has performed with Indiana Avenueās Slide Hampton and is currently touring with jazz legend Wayne Shorter. On Monday, April 27, from 7-11 p.m., jazz lovers on a budget can enjoy the monthly jazz jam session officiated by trumpeter Clifford Ratliff plus pianist Kevin Anker, Richard āSleepyā Floyd on drums and Fred Withrow on bass. There is no cover charge for the Monday event.
