Let your inner artist out

Who knew that when Tajuana Hill took a trip to Atlanta she would come back to Indianapolis with the idea to open a studio that fuses cocktails and art.

“My girlfriend took me to this place where you bring your own alcohol and paint,” said Hill. “For me who had never picked up a paintbrush before that class, I did pretty well. I was so proud of myself and I wanted to help other people feel that way.”

Hill composed a business plan and found the perfect location, she says, on Mass Ave., to open Mimosa and a Masterpiece, a paint class where people sip mimosas while a local artist instructs the art class.

From people who believe they can barely draw a stick figure to accomplished painters, Mimosa and a Masterpiece is an activity for all skill levels. Hill said that as long as participants come with an open mind, open ears and some creativity they will leave with a painting they can be proud of.

“There’s a melting pot of ‘artists’ that come,” added Hill.

During a typical evening, attendants will arrive early to choose their seat and get their drinks. The guest instructor gives a brief introduction of what students will paint for the evening and then the creativity begins.

Whether it’s a poinsettia, a sunset scene or shoes, students can interpret that evening’s topic any way they choose using any colors they choose.

“Usually I’m in the back and I’m always amazed at how people see the same thing, but translate it into something totally different. It’s an amazing process,” explained Hill.

At the end of the class, Hill gives away a special prize to the person whose painting is the most creative.

The cost of each class is $40 and includes participant’s first Mimosa and all the supplies they need to complete a 16×20 painting. Additional Mimosa’s and red and white wine may also be purchased.

An adult beverage and an art class may be the primary appeal of Mimosa and Masterpiece, but Hill also specializes in first date nights, girl’s night out events, monthly Saturday kid classes and private parties.

Tricee Bullock had also heard about the concept of a wine and art class while traveling and was happy that the concept is here in Indianapolis. She and a group of friends decided to take a class at Mimosa and a Masterpiece.

“I didn’t think I could paint, but I actually did a good job,” chuckled Bullock. “It was a lot of fun. We laughed so much and had our drinks while we painted. The instructor was very patient and took the time to show us what to do step-by-step. Before you know it, we were done and our paintings were perfect.”

In addition to classes, people who paint regularly can also come down to Hill’s Mass Ave. studio and purchase art supplies.

On Thursdays from 6:30 to 9 p.m., people can participate in a special art therapy class. Through a guided art-making exercise, participants will have their work analyzed by an art therapist and understand what their painting says about their personality.

First Fridays on Mass Ave. typically is a night for art lovers to come downtown and check out the street’s many art galleries and studios. Hill plans to donate 25 percent of the proceeds from a First Friday class at Mimosa and a Masterpiece to a local charity or non profit organization.

She also has plans to open up her studio once a month on Sundays and allow artists to come in and use the space for painting or a sanctuary to spend time with other artists.

Hill is excited about Mimosa and a Masterpiece and hopes that people will take advantage of the studio, but walk away with more than a painting to hang on their wall.

“I hope this gives them the spirit and courage to do something they never thought they could or even want to do,” said Hill. “I also want this to be a place where people can come and create.”
