Summer employers look to hire students

More by this author

Although summer is a time for fun and relaxation, most people are also looking for ways to earn money. For high school and college students, this is a yearly struggle. A lot of companies donā€™t want to hire someone for just a few months, making it more difficult for students to find a job.

Are you only in Indianapolis for the summer or too busy during the school year to hold a part-time position?

Following are companies that are hiring for summer and also ways you can make the most out of your talents.

Student jobs

Student Painters

Student Painters is hiring college students to do exterior painting jobs, such as decks, fences and houses. Employees work 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and will receive training. Students will work in a three-to four-man crew, with a production manager overseeing the project. The pay begins at $8.25 but can rise depending on work-pace and quality.

Put your talents to use

If these jobs just donā€™t fit you, think about earning money doing your favorite things. Below is a list of ways to make money your own way this summer.

Teach music lessons

If you are good at an instrument, whether vocal, wood or string, think about extending that knowledge to others. There may be people who have musical interests and do not know where to start, or people who just want to better their playing over the summer. You can also teach people how to read music. Offer your lessons on Craigslist, in newspapers, schools and on social media. Search your town to see what others are charging for music lessons and pick your price.

Tutor or babysit

Do you have experience babysitting or did you get a good grade in math? Your services are needed in Indianapolis. Since school is out of session, many parents need responsible people to watch their children or tutor their child to keep them keen. You can offer both tutoring and babysitting services on care.com, in newspapers, on Craigslist, and even at summer camps.

Create handmade jewelry/accessories

Are you interested in Do-It-Yourself projects or crafts? Start creating and selling your own jewelry and accessories! Men and women alike are always looking for exclusive, creative things to wear. Head over to Hobby Lobby, Michaelā€™s or Walmart to get affordable supplies. Think about making bracelets, necklaces, scarves, headbands or ask people what kind of accessories they desire. For handmade craft ideas, check Pinterest or DIY websites. Then, create and advertise on social media for an affordable price.

Design logos or flyers

Not everyone is skilled in Photoshop, and a lot of people donā€™t even know the basics. If you have graphic design skills, think about designing logos and/or flyers for the summer. There are new businesses everywhere that need help with a creative, affordable logo design and flyers to advertise their business. Many people also need flyers to promote their events. Search around town for those in need of a graphic designer and have a few examples of your work prepared.
