Tips for students’ first post-college job

More by this author

Students are graduating from college and entering the workforce, some for the first time. Having a 9 to 5 job is quite different from going to class or even an internship. Employers need young minds equipped with the latest information, yet some argue that today’s new hires lack a few classic traits.

The Indianapolis Recorder Newspaper spoke with Brooke Huntington, president and CEO of EmployIndy; and Gary Beaulieu, director of internships and career services at Butler University and got their tips for new grads on how to start their pro careers off right.

Always be professional

You’ll be working with people who vary in ages, races, backgrounds, experience and other differences. Recognize that others may not be like you and everyone brings something to the table. You come to the job with the latest technical knowledge; therefore, don’t be afraid to share that wisdom. But, your co-workers have the experience of life. Remember to listen and learn from your colleagues.

Everything is important

Though you’re starting your formal career, any job you’ve had prior to graduation is important. Take skills such as coming to work on time, engaging with colleagues and juggling work with other major tasks to your new job.

Dress for success

When it comes to career wardrobe, understand the type of job you have and the culture of the office. Overdress until you are fully immersed in the job and workplace.

Speak up!

When addressing your colleagues and superiors, eliminate filler speech such as “um” and “like.” During conversations, look people directly in the eye.

Keep it old school

Social media and email are a vital part of modern life, but communication and interpersonal skills are critical. Embrace technology but be prepared to do traditional business practices such as calling people on the phone.

Research

Learn as much as you can about the position and job field to propel you to the next level.

Level up

Are you employed in a job that’s not in your chosen field? Stay connected to your dream job and don’t give up.
