IPS event showcases school choice

More by this author

Parents within the Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) district can learn about the variety of school choices available for students — and apply for those schools on the spot — during the fourth annual IPS Showcase of Schools.

The showcase runs 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 18 at the Indiana State Museum, 650 W. Washington St.

“The showcase is an opportunity for families to come and learn about all of IPS’ school choices — pre-kindergarten all the way through 12th grade,” Director of Enrollment and Options Patrick Herrel said. “They can come and meet with the school leaders and talk to folks at each individual school about different programs they have.”

Instead of picking the top three schools for their student to attend, parents now have 10 choices. Giving more options will eliminate waitlists for schools, officials said. IPS will now use a three-round lottery system to fill seats, with the first window open Nov. 15 through Jan. 15, 2018. Families will receive notification of what school their student will attend on Feb. 15, 2018. Those dissatisfied with the results can reapply for a spot in their preferred school.

“We’ll offer more seats out at the front-end, so more families will know what their options are earlier in the year, which means families should apply as early as possible,” Herrel said.

In addition to the current school choice programs IPS offers, staff will be available to answer questions and provide information regarding the New IPS High School Experience. The IPS School Board of Commissioners recently approved a measure to reconfigure high schools in the district. Starting next school year, IPS will operate four high schools — Arsenal Technical, Crispus Attucks, George Washington and Shortridge.

“There will also be representatives from various departments within IPS so this includes our student services, our transportation department, our athletics department, and so they’ll be on hand to discuss things related to those different things,” Media Relations Coordinator Carrie Cline Black said.

Academic counselors also will be available to assist students who are undecided about which high school program would be the best fit.

Admission to the Indiana State Museum is free during the showcase. Families who visit each station on a passport checklist will receive a free parking voucher. IPS food truck, The Bus Stop Café, will give free meals to the first 500 people. Also, IPS performing arts students will perform during the showcase.
