New general says keep focused and persevere

Although Brig. Gen. Wayne Black is a self-described “ordinary person,” his recent accomplishment is quite extraordinary.

Black, a graduate of The Citadel in South Carolina, has been a member of the Indiana National Guard since 1996. His military career includes service in Afghanistan and Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Black, who comes from a strong military upbringing, credits his familial background and military training as the structure behind his success. His father was a veteran of the war in Vietnam.

The saying goes that to whom much is given, much is required. It could also be said for those who succeed, much has been overcome. In the case of Brig. Gen. Black, no obstacles, real or perceived, were enough to deter him from achieving his goals.

“Coming off of active duty, I thought coming into the Guard would be difficult. A lot of people believed there was this ‘good ol boy’ syndrome. I’ve been able to work all of the jobs I’ve wanted to do and a big part of that was preparation and positioning,” said Black.

Black is the first African-American general in Indiana National Guard’s 173-year history.

When asked what words of wisdom he had for young people wanting to “move up the ranks,” Black stressed the importance of staying focused and practicing perseverance.

“Be patient,” he said, “and persevere to work through challenges. Stay focused on where you want to go and do the things that lead in that direction.”

Black is set to officially assume his title during a ceremony held by the Indiana National Guard on July 13.
