IPS superintendent accepts new position

More by this author

Indianapolis Public Schools announced the resignation of Superintendent Dr. Lewis D. Ferebee on Dec. 3. Ferebee accepted a job as chancellor of District of Columbia Public Schools.

As of this time, IPS has not announced a transition plan or if there are any candidates to replace Ferebee.

ā€œThe Board of School Commissioners will meet soon to discuss transition decisions, interim leadership and a new leadership selection process,ā€ the school board said through a press release said. ā€œWe are committed to making sure that our schools and our children lose no momentum in the progress we are making and that the IPS system continues on our path to providing a world-class education to all our students through the hard work of our principals and our teachers.ā€

Ferebee became superintendent in 2013. Ferebeeā€™s tenure at IPS has been categorized by highs and lows. He received praise for embracing innovation schools, interacting with students and his role in the recent IPS referendum, which will increase teacher pay and improve school security. However, he has received criticism for low teacher retention, the speed commencement plan and approving a raise for himself.

ā€œSuperintendent Ferebeeā€™s impactful leadership made a significant difference not only for Indianapolis Public Schools, but also for our entire community,ā€ former mayor Greg Ballard said through an emailed statement.Ā ā€œAt a time when the largest school district in the state needed bold, new ideas, Dr. Ferebee led with transparency and courage, while always doing what is best for students. Congratulations and best wishes for continued success in our nationā€™s capital.ā€

This isnā€™t the first time Ferebee set his sights on a larger school district. In April, Ferebee was among the finalists for superintendent for Los Angeles Unified School District, the second largest district in the United States. He later withdrew his name from consideration for that position. Ferebeeā€™s consideration for top positions in large school districts attests to his reputation in education circles.

ā€œIf you look back just a few years ago, the notion that the superintendent here would be considered for a job running schools in Washington D.C. would have been unheard of, so I think this is a great day for Indianapolis, and itā€™s an example of the tremendous progress that has been made,ā€ Brandon Brown, CEO of The MindTrust, said.
