Chief Hite issues statement about New Year’s Eve safety

New Year’s Eve is a time for parties, fancy dresses, champagne, and midnight kisses. Unfortunately, the evening is also often accompanied by increased instances of crime.

Nationwide reports show that police departments across the country are preparing to address the spike in violence, drunken driving, and other issues.

IMPD Chief Rick Hite issued a statement this afternoon encouraging Hoosiers to enjoy their holiday responsibly by refraining from driving under the influence. Parents are also cautioned to not allow their children to attend unsupervised parties advertised on social media.

“Responsible celebrations do not include firing a firearm in any direction.  This dangerous and reckless behavior has a high probability of causing significant injury with sometimes fatal results,” he said. “The men and women of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department will have an increased presence across the city to assist our community and ensure our city is safe.”

Residents are encouraged to contact IMPD by calling 911 if they hear or see any suspicious activity.
