For the sixth consecutive year, Black men in Indiana are being encouraged to cut their health risks while cutting their hair, with the Annual Indiana Black Barbershop Health Initiative.
The initiative, coordinated by the Indiana Commission on the Social Status of Black Males (ICSSBM), kicked off March 31 in Evansville and will visit 15 Indiana cities on Saturdays throughout April.
The initiative will come to Indianapolis on April 9 at nine different locations across the city. (See the map below to find a location near you. For a list of participating barbershops in other Indiana cities,Ā click here.)
Attendees can stop in 9 a.m.Āā3 p.m. for free blood pressure and blood glucose screenings and information about prostate health.
Data from various sources, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Indiana State Health Department, shows Indianaās Black population experiences higher rates of diabetes, prostate cancer and other health issues than people in other racial demographics.
The ICSSBM event aims to educate the stateās Black men on their health status and promote early detection of potentially deadly conditions.
