Hoosier Lottery Grandstand filled with variety of fun fair events, high-powered competitions

Music, monster trucks and maybe a millionaire will take turns entertaining the masses gathered in the Hoosier Lottery Grandstand during the 17-day Indiana State Fair. It all starts Aug. 1 when one of the fairā€™s most picturesque events ā€“ the Giant Hot Air Balloon Launch ā€“ takes place shortly after sunrise.

Here is the complete list of the fairā€™s Grandstand entertainment:

Ā· Giant Hot Air Balloon Launch (Aug. 1 at approx. 6:15a.m.) ā€“ Fairgoers can watch as more than a dozen colorful hot air balloons take off from the fairgrounds infield and fill the Indianapolis sky.

Ā· Music Travel Consultants State Fair Band Day (Aug. 2; preliminaries at 9 a.m., finals at 8 p.m.) ā€“ Indianaā€™s top large school and small school marching bands compete for cash prizes, trophies and the title of ā€œIndianaā€™s Best Band.ā€ Admission for the preliminaries is $6 for adults and $2 for children 12 and under; admission for the finals is $10 for adults and $4 for children 12 and younger.

Ā· Lucas Oil Indy Super Pull presented by SpeedCo (Aug. 3 at 1 and 7 p.m.) ā€“ These high-powered tractors arenā€™t for harvesting! Drivers compete in four classes on two tracks in an action-packed pull that sends shockwaves through the stands. Admission is $5.

Ā· Worldā€™s Toughest Rodeo: Bulls & Broncs (Aug. 4 and 5 at 7:30 p.m.) ā€“ This free event features a dozen cowboys competing to break bucking broncos and tame mean-spirited bulls. There is also a pre-show interactive session at 1:30 p.m. when the public can get up close with the cowboys.

Ā· Indy Mile AMA Pro Flat Track Grand Nationals (Aug. 8 beginning at 3 p.m.) ā€“ The Indy Mile, part of the American Motorcycle Associationā€™s Pro racing series, features motorcyclists from all over the country racing at speeds over 120 mph. Practice and qualifying will take place at 3 p.m.; opening ceremonies are 7 p.m. with the finals scheduled for 9:30 p.m. Tickets are $31 and $36 and include fair admission.

Ā· Indiana State Fair Cheerleading Competition (Aug. 9; preliminaries at 9:30 a.m. and finals at 5 p.m.) ā€“ Middle school and high school cheer squads from all over Indiana compete in the annual State Fair Cheerleading Competition. Admission for the preliminaries is $6 for adults; $2 for children ages 6 ā€“ 12; free for children under 5. Admission for the finals is $10 for adults; $4 for children ages 6-12; free for children under 5.Ā 

Ā· Lucas Oil Monster Truck Nationals (Aug. 10 at 1 and 7 p.m.) ā€“ Some of the sportā€™s best known trucks like Stomper, Heavy Hitter and Lucas Oil Bigfoot will compete side by side in drags, wheelie shootouts and freestyle. Admission is $5.

Ā· MHS presents Extreme Freestyle Moto X (Aug. 11 at 2 and 6:30 p.m.) ā€“ This free show combines the tricks of BMX riding with the height and danger of motocross jumping, which keeps audiences riveted.

Ā· Indiana State Fair Horse Pulls (Aug. 12 at 3 p.m. for overweight and 7 p.m. for heavyweight) ā€“ This is a great display of raw horsepower and teamwork as Draft horses pull impressive loads on command. Admission is $5.

Ā· Harness Racing, including the Fox Stake (Aug. 13 at 6 p.m. and Aug. 14 at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m.) ā€“ Part of the Grand Circuit, Indiana State Fair harness racing brings together some of the best Standardbreds in Indiana with some of the best drivers in the country as the 88th running of the prestigious Fox Stake highlights two days of racing. Free with paid admission to the fair.

Ā· Hoosier Lotteryā€™s Hoosier Millionaire 25th Anniversary Show (Aug. 16 at 3 and 6 p.m.) ā€“ One lucky fairgoer could leave the Indiana State Fair $1 million dollars richer as the Hoosier Millionaire Show returns to the fair for two live shows. During the live 3 p.m. show, one person from the audience will be chosen randomly to play with other pre-selected contestants for a chance to win the top prize, $1 million, during the late show at 6 p.m. Contestants must be at least 18 years old to play.Ā 

Ā· Lucas Oil Demolition Derby presented by Pic-A-Part (Aug 17 at 4:30 p.m.) ā€“ Demolition drivers from all over the Midwest take turns bashing into each other on the front stretch of the fairgroundsā€™ dirt track. The last one running takes home the trophy. Admission is $5.

General admission is $10; discount tickets are $7; kids 5 and younger are free. Discount tickets are available at www.indianastatefair.com presented by Mattress Firm and the Indiana State Fair box office through July 31, and can also be purchased at all participating Indiana Walmart stores and all CVS/pharmacy stores while supplies last. State Fair parking is $5.
