MLK Day celebrations

Physician and Democratic candidate for Indiana Governor Woodrow Myers will be the keynote speaker at Lawrence United Methodist Church’s annual observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day 6 p.m. Jan. 20. The event, located at 5200 N. Shadeland Ave., will also include winners of an essay-writing contest amongst fifth grade students in Lawrence Township, as well as music from St. Lawrence Catholic Church and Lawrence United Methodist Church.

The Indiana Historical Society will have a free day of programs and performances 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Jan. 20 at the Indiana History Center, 450 W. Ohio St. Guests will learn about civil rights prior to King’s time, as well as Madam C.J. Walker’s activism.

The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis is offering free admission Jan. 20 to celebrate what would be King’s 91st birthday. Entertainment will include the Griot Drum Ensemble, storyteller Portia Jackson and vocal performances from Freetown Village.

Conner Prairie, 13400 Allisonville Road, will offer free admission 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Jan. 20. Activities will include a Peaceful Protest Exhibit and a playing of King’s “I Have a Dream” speech.

KKK flyers in Lafayette

The Lafayette Police Department confirmed approximately 20 KKK flyers were found in the downtown area of Lafayette over the weekend, resulting in three reports being investigated. There is no active investigation, according to Lt. Matt Gard, who said in an email the department “would be interested in speaking to whoever distributed the fliers if they are identified.”

Youth-led revival

The second annual Youth Black History Month Revival will be 7 p.m. Feb. 14 and 15 at St. Rita’s Catholic Church, 1733 Dr. Andrew J. Brown Ave. The event will close with 11 a.m. Mass on the 16th. The themes each day will be “Recipe for Revival,” “Revival or Regret?” and “No Revival Without the Spirit of Prayer.”

Osili retains presidency

The new members of the Indianapolis City-County Council reelected Democrat Vop Osili as president at their first meeting of the year Jan. 7. The councilors also reelected Democrat Zach Adamson as vice president.

Osili, who represents District 11, was first elected president in 2018 and has been on the council since 2011. Adamson, who represents District 17, has also been on the council since 2011.

The city-county council is made up of 20 Democrats and five Republicans following the 2019 municipal election.
