Tyeesha Bradley: Creating comics, coloring pages

More by this author

Since middle school, Tyeesha Bradley’s go-to creative outlet has been drawing. Today, she is a visual artist who creates quirky adult coloring pages and sells her creations online. Bradley is currently writing her first comic book.

The Recorder recently spoke with Bradley to learn more about her designs.

Indianapolis Recorder Newspaper: You create comic books and adult coloring pages. Can you tell me about your latest projects?

Bradley: So, right now I am a freelance illustrator. I started the adult coloring books to make some money on the side while I am working on writing my comic book. I wanted my comic book to be about a Black woman who grows up in a circus, outside the realms of society, and she grows up kind of innocent. When she goes into society, she has to solve mysteries but also has to come to grips with the way things are in society. She is a strong woman; she looks masculine and keeps her hair cropped, so she is even more of an outcast because she doesn’t look the way society thinks a woman should look.

Why is it important to feature characters of color?

I feel like when you go to a bookshop, you don’t see a lot of artists featuring Black people. I am friends with two artists on Instagram who exclusively feature people of color for coloring books, so it’s like, three of us out there as far as I can tell. Going natural was a really big turning point toward being an adult for me. I went natural right after graduating from school. It felt like every time I hit a milestone in my hair journey, it was another point toward being an adult. I try to feed a niche market, because maybe there is a little Black girl who wants to draw something that looks like her.

What art inspires you?

I read a lot of anime actually. I grew up reading “Shounen Jump”; it’s very action-packed, and I love to read high fantasy books. I kind of want to do a combination of those genres eventually, featuring an African-American woman lead character. I would say my favorite book right now is “Rat Queens”; it’s a world kind of like World of Warcraft, and it’s basically just girls getting into trouble.
