When the major renovation to the Shelby Branch of the Indianapolis Public Library is completed in early November, the branch will be known as the Garfield Park Branch, reflecting the desire of neighborhood residents to refer to the branch by their beloved and well-known Garfield Park, which sits adjacent to the branch on the near Southside of Indianapolis.

The grand re-opening of the 6,400-square foot branch, located at 2502 Shelby St., is scheduled on Nov. 3, following four months of renovations that will result in enlarged reading areas, remodeled children's area, new restrooms, new computer lab and a number of "green" energy-saving and efficiency additions.

These include rain barrels, composting, an electric vehicle charging station, composting areas, a storytelling garden with native plants, bike racks, HVAC and lighting upgrades, and increased interior natural lighting.

The concept of a "Green Library in the Park" will serve as a catalyst for ongoing public education opportunities for energy and resource conservation.

During the grand re-opening, there'll be a special ribbon-cutting ceremony with cake for all attending at 11:45 a.m. From noon to 8 p.m., the branch will present stories for children and introductions to classes in the new computer lab. Docents will be present to talk with patrons about new features relating to the "Green Library in the Park." The public can enjoy these and other activities at the Garfield Park Branch on Family Day, Nov. 4, and Community Day on Nov. 5.
