The City’s Department of Public Works (DPW) will officially open New York Street to traffic in both directions between 3-4 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 21. The $2.6 million conversion of New York Street to a two-way street between West Street and White River Parkway is engineered to both calm traffic speeds and increase traffic circulation for commuters to the campuses of IUPUI and the nearby hospitals. The improvement mirrors an upcoming DPW project to convert Michigan Street to two-way traffic next year, also between West Street and White River Parkway.
“This project represents a long collaboration between major community stakeholders including IUPUI, the hospitals and our west-side neighborhoods,” said Melody Park, chief engineer for Indy DPW. “This project will both increase the safety of students and pedestrians by calming traffic speeds along New York Street as well as allow motorists more direct access to their destinations on the university and hospital campuses.”
The newly converted New York Street will comprise two 10-foot-wide traffic lanes in each direction as well as an additional 10-foot turn lane at intersections. The improvement also includes a sidewalk on each side of the road and an 8-foot, off-street bike lane running just north of the street.
