The women of the Alpha Sigma Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., along with the undergraduate members of Alpha, Mu, Gamma Zeta, and Epsilon Chi Chapter, hosted the annual Central Region Area VII Workshop at Butler University. This event provides leadership training and development for it’s members along with an opportunity for fellowship. The workshop was facilitated by the President of Central Region, Syntaktes Tiffany Hightower, and the Undergraduate Chapter Coordinator Delia Askew Harris.
This year’s event drew out 150 members, the largest workshop in the history of the Area, as well as members of the organization’s Philo affiliates group. Under the leadership of current chapter President Catina Y. Harris, Alpha Sigma was excited to welcome their fellow members to the birthplace of their organization and worked to provide a fantastic experience for everyone.
The program included a speech from Indianapolis City-Council President Maggie A. Lewis who is also a member of the organization. Her focus was the need for more African American women to not only vote in national and local elections, but also to consider running for offices. The event also included the collection of donations in support of Dove Recovery House, a local facility for women who are fighting against substance abuse for which President Lewis serves as Executive Director.
Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. was founded on November 12, 1922, at Butler University by seven school teachers dedicated to educating youth towards heights of great attainment. The organization’s aim is to enhance the quality of life within the community under their slogan “Greater Service, Greater Progress”.
