Gospel great comes to Indy for a live CD recording

More by this author

Join gospel singer “Lady” Karen Hoskins as she records her live CD on March 28 at The Caring Place, 2901 N. Post Road. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the event begins at 7 p.m.

What makes this a “don’t miss” event is that Lady Karen’s concert is presented by gospel giant, Dr. Bobby Jones.

Tickets are free, however, you must register online at facebook.com/ladykarensings or eventbrite.com to get an admission ticket. Seats are first come, first served.

The Recorder recently spoke with Jones to find out more about Lady Karen, Jones’ longevity in gospel and his hope for the future of the storied genre of music.

Thank you so much for speaking with me today.

It’s my pleasure Mrs. Key.

Tell me more about Lady Karen?

Lady Karen is a young lady who is one of the lead singers in my organization. She’s also an independent artist. I’m (coming to Indianapolis) to support her because she’s a part of what I do. Lady Karen is a very faithful member, dependable and above all, talented. I’m looking forward to the concert, actually.

What can people expect from this concert?

We’ll be getting a good feel for the real Karen Hoskins. Most of the material I use with her is not her specific material. I’ll be watching like everyone else, so I’ll be interested to see what she brings to the forefront, watch her artistry and how she introduces her format. After all, she works for me and I expect the best from her. I’m expecting a good spiritual moment and appropriate material. I know she’ll be immaculately dressed because she’s the best dressed in my organization.

You have been actively engaged in the gospel community for well over 30 years. What keeps you going?

The love of the Lord, the love of what I do and the love of people I work with and for. Those are the three main ingredients to any successful situation.

What are your thoughts about the current gospel music industry?

Each of the artists I have come in contact with and those that have come on “Bobby Jones Gospel” on BET have done an excellent job in keeping the music alive. It was only in 1980 that we started this with BET getting it televised on a weekly basis that the music began to grow and develop a new character. I love the artists, I think they’re professional and sincere. I’m looking forward to see what’s in store for gospel music as it makes its way across the world and into mainstream music if that’s what the Lord intends for it to do. If he doesn’t then it will be in the appropriate places.

How do you feel when people are so moved by the music on your show, they dedicate or rededicate their life to Christ?

That is what you want to hear – how successful have we been in communicating effectively what it is that we do. I get it so much. I’m overwhelmed with responses from people saying they enjoy the show. ‘It’s my Sunday morning drive,’ ‘it sings my soul,’ ‘the music is inspiring and encouraging.’ Those are the kinds of remarks I get. I feel achieved when that happens.
