Voting for IPS in November is a vote for Indy’s future

More by this author

For more than 100 years, Indianapolis Public Schools’ presence in our community has made a difference while graduating thousands of people who have emerged as leaders not only for our city, but across the country.

As executive director of 100 Black Men of Indianapolis Inc. (The 100), I represent some of Indiana’s finest leaders who have a deep commitment to educate students through mentorship.

One of our valued relationships is with Indianapolis Public Schools. Under Superintendent Dr. Lewis Ferebee, the interaction between the district and The 100 has increased significantly and our connection has never been stronger.

Because I know the superintendent, school board and administration are all committed to providing our young people the best education possible, The 100 strongly endorses IPS’ November referenda that will continue the district’s efforts to increase compensation to teachers and enhance the safety measures at its schools.

Education is a very critical priority in our city and for our children. The IPS referenda will have a monthly impact on the district’s average household of just $3.19. In return for this modest investment, IPS will be able to make our students feel safer at school, while also incentivizing our teachers and school leaders to remain in our communities.

At The 100, we work with the district right in the schools (including Arsenal Tech) to have a maximum, sustained impact. We want students to know our presence is constant and constructive. Education is the key to growth, and maximizing your education as an adult is how you become a productive member of our society.

On Nov. 6, please vote to approve the IPS referenda, and give our students and teachers the support they need as we all work together to make our neighborhoods and our city a better place to live.
